In the Garden - Sustainable Gardening 2019 Stamp & Medallion PNC

Please Note: These PNCs are pre-owned and may show signs of wear.

A veggie garden is an important component in a sustainable garden, especially as it fosters seasonal eating. Housing a veggie garden in a raised, contained bed protects the soil from trampling and over-digging.

A sunny position will encourage crops to grow throughout the year, and a companion plant such as marigold attracts pollinating bees and pest-eating ladybirds. In a sustainable garden, it's best to irrigate crops from a rainwater tank, use mulch made from garden waste and fertilise with nutrient-rich fertiliser from a worm farm, compost bin or bokashi bin.

Traditional scarecrows can scare away the smaller birds that a sustainable garden seeks to attract and retain. A small wooden windmill does a better job of gently discouraging garden creatures from eating veggie crops.

The stamp is postmarked for the first day of issue, 1 August 2019.
