Australia's First Mints - Growth from Gold

2016 Four Coin Mintmark & Privymark Set

*Please Note: These coins are pre-owned and the cards may show signs of wear*

The Australian gold rush of the 19th century was instrumental in developing Australian coins, as this valuable metal emerged from Australian soil. The raw material was provided for local currency and Australian minting was born.

Gold coins were struck unofficially at the Adelaide Assay Office (established in 1852) and officially at Royal Mint branches established in Sydney (1855, Melbourne (1872) and Perth (1899) before the Royal Australian Mint became the producer of Australia's circulating coins in 1965.

These four coins pay tribute to the uniquely Australian sovereign struck at the Sydney Mint and celebrates the tradition of adorning coins with single-letter mintmarks to show their city of origin. The three privymarks in this set honour the locations of Australia's first mints.
