Following the landing at Anzac Cove, Australian and New Zealanad forces in May helped to defeat a Turkish counterattack aimed at pushing them into the sea. During the British offensive in August they fought in major actions at Lone Pine and The Nek and advanced on Hill 971. With winter looming and casualties mounting, the decision was made to evacuate the peninsula in December 1915. The Australian's sustained 26,000 casualties on Gallipoli, of whom 8,000 died.
