Burke & Wills Crossing Stony Desert

2011 $1 Stamp & Coin PNC

This PNC was produced by Downies in collaboration with the Royal Australian Mint and Australia Post to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Burke and Wills expedition.

The Burke and Wills expedition set off from Melbourne on 20 August 1860. The group of 19 men, led by Robert O'Hara Burke and William John Wills, was tasked with crossing Australia from south to north in the hopes of finding new grazing land and a route for an overland telegraph line, as well as to make scientific discoveries.
